Should You Follow Your Head Or Heart?

At some point in our lives, we have all come to a crossroads where we have to decide matters of the heart. One path will likely be ruled by the heart and the other by the head. Chances are that you are going to opt for your heart’s desire. But what feels good is not always good for you. So, should you follow your head or heart when it comes to dating?

The Heart Dater: When Love is Blind

When we follow our heart, we become heart dater who follows their emotions and acts on them. This is when you fall in love with someone you know damn well that you should not! The red flags are right there, but you, my friend, ignore them. Lust and chemistry take over all sanity, and you find yourself doing things for love that you know are not in your best interests.

The Allure of the Forbidden

One of the reasons people fall into the trap of following their hearts is the allure of the forbidden. We all love a thrill, and the idea of something off-limits can make it more exciting. So you may be a young individual who has fallen for a married person. Or a man who detests kids but finds himself in the arms of a hot single mother of five? Or you are a businesswoman with high life expectations, and the allure of the struggling artist has pushed you off course. Whatever the reason, the danger and excitement are alluring, and it can be tough to resist.

Ignoring Red Flags

When you are in love, it can be challenging to see the warning signs that something is wrong. These warning signs, also known as red flags, can be anything from your partner being rude to servers to their previous relationships. However, ignoring these red flags can lead to heartache and pain in the future. So, listening to your intuition and making decisions based on what you know is right is crucial.

Giving In to Lust

Lust can be a powerful emotion, and letting it take over can cloud our judgment. As a result, we can find ourselves making decisions based solely on our physical desires and not considering the bigger picture. While there is nothing wrong with enjoying sex, recognise when lust drives our choices and take a step back and reevaluate.

The Head Dater: Practicality Over Romance

On the other hand, the head dater is more practical in their approach. They tend to be more logical and strategic, relying on their brain rather than their heart to make decisions. They prioritise long-term compatibility, shared values, and common goals when looking for a partner. They also consider their partner’s financial stability, career goals, and lifestyle choices and how they align with their own.

While choosing a partner with the head may seem more practical, it has its downsides. Sometimes, people choose partners based on financial or social status rather than emotional compatibility. This can lead to feelings of emptiness, loneliness, and dissatisfaction in the relationship, ultimately leading to a breakup.

Making the Right Decision

So, should you follow your head or your heart when it comes to dating? The answer is more complex. It ultimately depends on the individual and their unique circumstances. However, some general guidelines can help you make the right decision. First and foremost, listen to your heart. Your emotions and feelings are important indicators of what you want and need in a partner. However, it’s equally important to remain cautious and not ignore any red flags. If something doesn’t feel right, it isn’t.

It’s also important to use your head when making decisions:

  1. Consider your long-term goals and values and whether your potential partner aligns with them.
  2. Think about how your partner’s personality and lifestyle will fit with yours in the long run. This can help you avoid getting into a relationship doomed to fail.
  3. Feel free to seek professional help if you struggle to decide about your love life. A therapist or counsellor can help you work through any underlying issues causing you to make poor relationship decisions.

There is no right or wrong answer when choosing between the head or heart in love matters. Listen to your heart, use your head when making decisions, and seek help. With patience and guidance, you can make the right decisions and find love that lasts a lifetime.
